Do You Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade?
If your home was built before 2000, there's a strong chance your 100A panel can't safely handle modern loads. Here's how to know.
Red Flags Your Panel Is Undersized
- Breakers trip when running microwave + hair dryer + AC
- You see federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco brand panel (fire hazard)
- The panel is warm to the touch or hums
- You've had a home addition without a subpanel added
- You want to install a Level 2 EV charger
100A vs 200A vs 400A
100A: fine for a 1,500 sqft home with gas appliances. 200A: today's standard — required for most all-electric homes, EV chargers, and homes over 2,000 sqft. 400A: needed for very large homes, home shops, or dual EV chargers.
Cost & Timeline
Full panel upgrade from 100A to 200A: $2,500–$4,500 including permit and utility coordination. Turnaround: usually 1 day of work but 5–10 business days total once permits and utility scheduling are factored in.
