When to Trim

  • Branches within 6 feet of the roof or power lines
  • Dead limbs but a healthy trunk
  • Improve sunlight penetration for grass or garden
  • Storm damage limited to 25% or less of the canopy

When to Remove

  • Trunk lean over 15° from vertical toward a structure
  • Fungal growth (mushrooms) at the base
  • Hollowed trunk verified by an arborist
  • Damage exceeds 50% of the canopy
  • Root damage from foundation work or utility digging
