Tree Trimming vs. Removal: How to Decide
That leaning oak near your house — save it or take it down? A certified arborist walks through the decision framework.
When to Trim
- Branches within 6 feet of the roof or power lines
- Dead limbs but a healthy trunk
- Improve sunlight penetration for grass or garden
- Storm damage limited to 25% or less of the canopy
When to Remove
- Trunk lean over 15° from vertical toward a structure
- Fungal growth (mushrooms) at the base
- Hollowed trunk verified by an arborist
- Damage exceeds 50% of the canopy
- Root damage from foundation work or utility digging
Cost Ranges
- Trimming (small tree): $150–$450
- Trimming (large mature tree): $450–$1,200
- Removal (small tree, under 30 ft): $250–$650
- Removal (large tree, 60+ ft): $1,200–$3,500
- Stump grinding (per inch of stump diameter): $3–$5
