How to Prevent Frozen Pipes Before the Next Cold Snap
A frozen pipe burst releases 250+ gallons in a single day. Follow this 10-minute checklist tonight.
Why Pipes Burst
Water expands 9% when it freezes. Inside a sealed copper or PEX pipe, that expansion creates 40,000+ PSI of pressure — enough to split the strongest pipe. The crack often only leaks when the ice thaws, which is why bursts are discovered days after the freeze.
Immediate Prep Before a Cold Front
- Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls
- Let cold-water faucets drip pencil-lead thin overnight
- Set thermostat to 60°F minimum, even if leaving town
- Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses
- Insulate any exposed pipes in attics, basements, or garages
If a Pipe Has Already Frozen
Do NOT use an open flame. Open the faucet slightly so melting water can escape. Warm the pipe with a hair dryer, heating pad, or towels soaked in hot water. If the pipe has already burst, immediately shut off the main water valve and call a licensed emergency plumber.
